Notes & Reviews:

A gorgeous release of early Baroque songs with soprano Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli's expressiveness at the fore and the Pera Ensemble. "Momenti d'Amore"; (Moments of Love) presents the varying facets of women through the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The interplay of Lombardi's meltingly amber toned coloratura with the ensemble's beautifully executed tones makes this an enchanting collection inspiring further discovery.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
The program includes several instrumental pieces, all terrific. I loved Italian composer and lutenist Andre Falconieri's (1585-1656) 'Passacelle' and 'Ciaccona', both rhythmic and dancelike. I also enjoyed Gaspar Sanz's (1640-1710) lively 'Zaraband'; the composer is perhaps more remembered for his three-volume treatise on Baroque guitar. Spanish composer and gambist Diego Ortiz's (1510-1570) gentle 'Recercada Segunda' is played with charm by Sommer and gambist Franziska Grunze.

There's great music for voice here, too. It's high time Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) was lifted out of music history classes and into the concert setting; I'm always happy to see her name on a program. The program also includes arias by Monteverdi, Cavalli, and Caccini. Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli sings well; I like her best when she really sings out. She sings with great energy and a bright, even tone. A great recording for anyone interested in a truly new (and tasteful) take on some older music. I loved it. Notes, texts, and translations.
