Notes & Reviews:

The composer and pianist Nikolai Kapustin has criss-crossed the territories of classical and jazz throughout his long career. The Korean pianist Sun Hee You presents a collection of Kapustin's piano works that feature the range of Kapustin's output, from the complex works of great depth that his sonatas represent, to his homage to Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" contained within his Variations and the pieces that bear the unmistakable cadences and influences that Kapustin's 1950s jazz forays left with him. Her performance both a stunning virtuosity with a clear grasp of Kapustin's sensibilities and make for a fine introduction to this composer little known outside of Russia.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
The program comprises works composed from 1984 to 1991, starting with Sonata 1. This work is best described as a written-out improvisation and begins as if Scriabin and jazz had a child. Tango, blues, and rock make an appearance in II. The final movement becomes a jazz solo. You plays such difficult repertoire with ease, along with the requisite sense of freedom and verve; the sonata is a fierce and accessible powerhouse that would be appropriate on concert programs. The two selections from the 8 Concert Etudes are also technically difficult, with more jazz infusion. Etude 1 is frenetic, with perpetual motion. Etude 7 has a nice range of sound. With the Bagatelle 9, You has a good sense of touch in capturing the jazz style. She is percussive when necessary, yet silken when the work calls for it. This wonderful recording should set the standard for Kapustin recordings in years to come.
