Notes & Reviews:
In this 1983 performance, Maazel conducts Beethoven's liberation opera full of energy and precision, partnered by a highly dramatic Leonore, a Florestan in heroic voice and the Vienna Philharmonic in brilliant form.
Gramophone Magazine, April 2016
The musical performance is - of course - strictly organised, well played and unfailingly together on a nuts and bolts level... [James King] is a dependably moving Florestan, more nobly broken than defiant, still able to effect the role's tricky turns. Eva Marton can be a thrilling Leonore when she opens up... Theo Adam delivers a thoroughly professional 'bad guy' Pizarro [and] Watson a superb, tinglingly fresh Marzelline.
American Record Guide, May/June 2016
This was recorded at a performance of the 1983 Salzburg Festival. As one would expect, it boasts a cast of singers celebrated for their roles as well as the chorus of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic, led by Lorin Maazel, a conductor well experienced with this opera. It is a very good production. Maazel and his orchestra play a rousing Leonore Overture No. 3 between the two scenes of Act II. The booklet contains synopsis, an essay, and timings. All in all, this is a very good Fidelio.
