"Quirky Dream" are works featuring the American bassoonist and educator Gabriel Beavers' in a contemporary collection of compositions for bassoon and ensemble featuring the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and the Bergonzi String Quartet.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
The performances are strong. The University of Utah Wind Ensemble tears into the scores with great energy and intensity, and they handle well Maslanka's towering structures, virtuosic passages, and solitary meditations. In many moments the students produce a glorious organ-like sound and display the technical capabilities of a high-level professional orchestra. The Ensemble's balance, blend, and dynamic range are impressive. In Liberation, too, the students form an effective team of vocalists and accompanists.

The Clarinet Concerto is really more of a symphony for solo clarinet and band, full of the sweeping themes, rousing chorales, robust orchestration, acrobatic writing, and emotional gamut that Maslanka relishes. Soloist and ensemble participate equally in the unfolding of the music, and the solo clarinet often propels the action with long, arching, expressive lines that weave in, out, and above the band. Here, Myroslava Hagen plays with great power and sensitivity. She also sports good fingers in the composer's demanding flurries of notes.

Scott Hagen deserves kudos for inspiring and preparing his group to execute this formidable and daring program. Maslanka fans will enjoy this release.
