Notes & Reviews:

A collection of contemporary works for orchestra composed by Americans Fred Broer, William Coble and Stephen Yip with the Moravian Philharmonic conducted by Petr Vronský.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
Moving from small chamber ensembles to fuller groups, Turbulent Sky increases intensity as well as the number of players. I of Fred Broer's Symphony for string orchestra is guided by terrified violins scraping out high pedals and quick, repeated chase motives. II continues the pervading sense of urgent unease and it is expressive". The whirling tailspin that is III uses sharp musical language in addition to hits. Broer keeps the bristling ensemble from bursting. Stephen Yip's Luminous Mystery, with full orchestra, employs many more colors than Broer's Symphony. I often enjoy Yip's works precisely because of his color palette and how he writes for large ensembles. The Luminous Mystery begins with an expressive, violin solo passage that blends Eastern motifs with rustic American, Copland-like sounds.
