Notes & Reviews:

A deeply satisfying listening experience awaits with this recording featuring the LaSalle Quartet joined by Lynn Harrell (cello) and James Levine (piano) in an idiom defining chamber music set. Including Schubert's String Quintet in C major, D 956, likely one of the last pieces written by him before his death along with Schumann's Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44 composed in the exultantly creative period that burst from Schumann after finally able to marry his wife, muse and fellow composer, Clara. Originally released in 1981 and re-mastered in Super Audio format and on the Pentatone's Remastered Classics imprint.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
These pieces were recorded by DG in 1977 (Schubert) and 1980 (Schumann) in quadraphonic sound. Here they have been re-mastered as SACDs by Pentatone in a series called Remastered Classics.

The performances are quite different, but both show distinctive profiles. The Schubert is a labored affair, broad in tempo with agogic accents all over the place. This is a well thought-out interpretation, and one has to appreciate that they didn't just sit down and play the notes. The Alban Berg Quartet with Heinrich Schiff comes closer to the mark for me.
