Notes & Reviews:

A collection of Schubert lieder whose title Nacht und Trume (Night and Dreams) belies the broad thematic range of lament and contemplation in these intimate songs. Stunningly performed by Welsh soprano Ailish Tynan with the sensitive accompanist Iain Burnside in his first of what is expected to be a multiple part series surveying the jewels of the Schubert vocal canon.

BBC Music Magazine, January 2016
She has the kind of voice one associates with Despina in Cosi fan tutte...It goes without saying that Iain Burnside's accompaniments are ideal, detailed in the modern manner but never obtruding, and in all respects the disc shows two dedicated artists who have given a lot of thought to every aspect of these marvellous pieces. Where I have doubts is in that edge which Tynan's voice sometimes takes on...

Classical Music, January 2016
Tynan's bright, bell-like sound and flexible control is amply matched by Burnside's imaginative mastery at the keyboard, and what is billed as a first volume in a series benefits from fine recorded sound.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
A few years ago I heard Tynan and Burnside give a fine Schumann recital in London. I wish I felt as positive about how she sounds in this program of 17 Schubert songs about women pursuing love of different sorts. She is at her best in the more straightforward songs like 'Sei Mir GegrSst' and 'Die Forelle'. This is the first volume of Burnside's survey of Schubert's songs, each volume to be recorded with a different singer. Burnside's playing is up to his usual high standards.

Reviews

Beautiful performance of these incredible songs!!!
This CD consists of 17 Schubert Lieder, and what an amazing collection of songs this is. The liner notes and back cover of the CD suggest that this selection of songs could carry the subtitle Women in Love, and while that is certainly true it is also very clear from the outset that Iain Burnsides piano accompaniment is sensitive and intuitive while Ailish Tynans Soprano is delicate, powerful, full of warmth and understanding, and sensitively rendered as if the music was written for her to bring forth. And as the Gramophone review indicates, her diction is *excellent*.

Every song on this recording is wonderfully brought to life and expressed, but particularly captivating are Swanengesang (it just aches with emotionglorious), Raste, Krieger, Krieg ist aus, Wandrers Nachtlied (just beautifully rendered), and Du bist die Ruh (my favorite on this recording its just amazing). And of course Ave Maria and Nacht und Traume are spectacular. This is beautiful music, and wonderfully brought to life.
The recording quality is breath taking, the all digital recording capturing every nuance of Mr. Burnsides piano and every subtle emotion shift of Ms. Tynans glorious voice. This is music for the soul, and if you adore Schubert Lieder as much as I do, this disc is a must have. Buy this recording its worth every penny.
