Notes & Reviews:

A native of Cuba, Leo Brouwer is universally acknowledged as one of the most challenging and innovative of contemporary composers. This programme brings the guitar into consort with the bandurria, a small lute dating from the 16th century and perennially popular in South America, the combination perfect for expressing the rustic rhythms of Cuban folk style in Msica Incidental Campesina. This recording covers a kaleidoscopic range of techniques and emotions, from political martyrdom in Chile to the immense vistas of Brazil. The Sonata para Bandurria was composed for one of the virtuoso performers on this recording, Pedro Chamorro.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
The second disc is titled "Music for Bandurria and Guitar" and is not strictly duos. It shares two pieces with the Brasilian Duo's disc: Micro Piezas and Musica Incidental Campesina. The other two works are a sonata for banrurria and another for guitar, with a set of variations for guitar. The bandurria is a lute-like instrument, with five or six courses (double strings, tuned in unison). It has a higher range than a guitar, and is played with a plectrum. The sound is rather like mandolin and guitar. It's interesting to hear the new instrument. The playing of Chamorro and Gonzalez is quite fine. In the duos, ensemble is beautifully coordinated, and both have excellent technique and perceptive musicality. If you love Brouwer, you'll enjoy both of these, especially at the Naxos price.

Not for the Faint of Heart
Leo Brouwer: Music for Guitar and Bandurria NAXOS

The influential Cuban composer Leo Brouwer creates works that present a cross-section of 20th century musical possibilities, mixing European Romanticism with modern jazz influenced harmonies and 3rd world themes and grooves. The resulting compositions are now featured in the performances of most of the worlds best
known classical guitarists and have brought a much needed breath of modernity to that instruments repertoire.

This recording by renowned guitarist Pedro Mateo Gonzalez and bandurria virtuoso Pedro Chamorro consists of works for each instrument and includes three world premiere recordings, most notably the formidable Sonata para Bandurria dedicated to Mr. Chamorro.

The guitarist, Mr. Gonzalez, plays with the to-be-expected flawless technique of the modern concert guitarist, but its his rhythmic intensity that makes him especially well suited to Brouwers music. However, the focus of this particular project is the performance of Mr. Chamorro on the bandurria, a mandolin-like instrument with a flat back and six courses of doubled metal strings, played with a plectrum. Brouwer takes this small, Vivaldi-ish sound and turns it loose on some of his most difficult and experimental melodies; for musician and listener alike, this is not music for the faint of heart.

Recorded with the pristine clarity and precision which is the hallmark of the entire Naxos guitar series, Leo Brouwer: Music for Guitar and Bandurria will make a welcome addition to the collections of Brouwer fans, world music enthusiasts guitarists and the general listener with an interest in modern harmonic developments.
The liner notes keep referring to Mr. Brouwers music as challenging. Dont be put off, this is a challenge well worth accepting.
