Notes & Reviews:

Beethoven's Symphony No.9 is considered one of the greatest compositions in the western musical canon. Schubert composed his ninth symphony in 1825, a year after he attended the premiere of Beethoven's ninth. His quotation of the Ode to Joy theme from Beethoven's epic finale served as both an acknowledgment and a challenge. Wilhelm Furtwängler leads the mighty Philharmonia Orchestra in this unique coupling of ninth symphonies.
