Various Artists: Youth: Music from the Motion Picture

Album Notes

Like the director's Academy Award-winning film The Great Beauty two years prior, the soundtrack for Paolo Sorrentino's Youth, a comedy-drama about a retired composer/conductor (Michael Caine) and his filmmaker friend (Harvey Keitel), offers a nimble mix of classical recordings and contemporary indie pop. The classical portions include selections from Debussy's Préludes, Stravinsky's The Firebird, and Saverio Mercadante's opera Virginia. On the indie side, ruminative singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek is well represented with two solo songs and "Third and Seneca" by his band/alter ego Sun Kil Moon. David Byrne and Paloma Faith also make appearances, as do the Retrosettes Sister Band, who supply doses of classic soul. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang contributes multiple tracks on behalf of the film's fictional composer, including the aching vocal piece "Simple Song #3." ~ Marcy Donelson
