American Record Guide, May/June 2016
This is nicely varied recital program, including compositions by two Bulgarian composers, Dimiter Christoff (b. 1933) and Georgi Zlatev- Cherkin (1905-77). Valtcheva-Evrova has a lovely voice. Valtcheva-Evrova sings the Rachmaninoff songs with wonderful line, and the Moussorgsky Nursery Song Cycle is also terrific; Evrov is a fine pianist and performs these with incredible clarity. Dimiter Christoff 's pieces are dark, sparse, and captivating. Unexpected harmonies and unaccompanied phrases for the soprano create a strangely intimate, unusual world. I loved them. Zlatev-Cherkin's 'Blue-Eyed Maiden' starts gently and builds to a broad climax; it's a nice end to a recital that got better the longer I listened. Skip the German and you'll enjoy the rest.
