Notes & Reviews:

Though he died in his mid-forties Benjamin Godard, a child prodigy who had entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of ten, wrote prolifically in almost all genres. Stylistically he adhered to models such as Schumann and Chopin rather than aligning himself with Wagner, as did many of his French contemporaries. His piano works are gracious and witty, sometimes spiced with unusual harmonies, and balance perfectly the differing demands of the salon and the concert hall. Spanning the breadth of Benjamin Godard's compositional life this selection of piano music includes the gracious and warm Nocturnes, which show some Chopin influence, and the Trois Fragments Potiques, Op.13 with their long-spun lyrical melodies. His sparkling vivacity and more virtuosic side can be savoured in the late Fantaisie en trois parties, Op. 143.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
This is Reyes's second volume of Godard's piano works (Grand Piano 683, Mar/Apr 2016), just as well played and brimming with new discoveries. Comparisons of Godard (1849-95) with Chopin are inevitable. Their lives overlapped by only a few months, but both died young of tuberculosis, and they wrote in similar styles. While Chopin only ventured outside of the solo piano idiom for a handful of significant works, Godard composed seven operas, over 100 songs (many with his own poetry), 5 large symphonic works, 4 concertos, and many chamber and instrumental pieces. Violin was his primary instrument, yet he composed idiomatic and significant works for the piano.
