Notes & Reviews:

Shostakovich's string quartets are the epitome of eloquence. The four selections here progress from the golden age of Soviet realism with Quartet No.10, though to the Webernian purity of Quartet No.13. The Beethoven Quartet, Shostakovich's frequent collaborator, was the first to record these works. He dedicated several of his fifteen quartets to the group and its members.
