Notes & Reviews:

The French Suites have a special place among Bach's keyboard works. Besides containing music as profound and poetic as any Bach wrote, their textures have a transparency and sparkle that reflects a move towards the galant style fashionable among Bach's contemporaries. In this, the third instalment of Peter Hill's acclaimed Bach series, Hill has chosen to follow the suites with his own completion of Mozart's Suite in C, K399. With Bach and Handel as his models, this work epitomises Mozart's fascination with Baroque music. Hill's celebrated return to the studio with Delphian four years ago continues to reap rich artistic rewards, with a 'Diapason d'Or' and a recent Gramophone Award nomination for his premiere recording of Messiaen's rediscovered La Fauvette passerinette; here in Bach, too, his abundant energy and passion are deeply informed by a lifetime of scholarship.

BBC Music Magazine, February 2016
Peter Hill never underestimates [the] challenge, and there's a confiding wisdom sustaining his latest Bachian foray. Trademark unshowy integrity, too, articulated through a silky translucent tone and captured in an agreeably intimate recording.

Reviews

Unbelievable performance of Bach’s French Suites…stunning!
This recording consists of Bach’s French Suites (No.’s 1 through 6), as well as Mozart’s Suite in C (K. 399), performed by the amazingly sensitive pianist Peter Hill. Each suite is performed in numerical succession, with the Mozart selection being performed as the last piece on the second CD.

The Menuet I & II are the highlight of Suite No. 1 (BWV 812), being both playful as well as technically challenging, and stimulating to the ears and the mind. In Suite No. 2 (BWV 813), the Sarabande was particularly satisfying both musically and intellectually, as each note seemed to fall precisely where it should, and was given just the proper dynamic by Mr. Hill. This is amazing interpretive work, and even though it sounds somewhat simple and straight-forward, the complexity contained herein is not to be underestimated. In Suite No. 3 (BWV 814), it is the fourth movement (“Anglaise”) that captured this listener’s attention, being both precisely subtle as well as warm and stimulating. This is both marvelous compositional work, as well as delightful interpretation, and this particular track (no 15 on the first CD) was worth buying the CD for alone. The Menuet & Trio are also amazing. Suite No. 4 starts off particularly warm (the “Allemande” is gorgeous), and the closing “Gigue” is just delightful, showcasing the separation of the bass line played by the left hand and the wonderful melody entrusted to the right hand on the keyboard.

The second CD holds Suites 5 & 6, as well as the Mozart selection. Suite No. 5 is just amazing from the start, delighting the ear while lovingly engaging the mind (the “Allemande” is just delightful as performed by Mr. Hill), and the Courante is also a treat, being both energetic and precisely rendered. The sixth suite is a deliberately constructed work (not that the others aren’t, but it is evident in the progression displayed here that this is most certainly the case), with the “Petite Minuet” being particularly pleasing to the heart and the ear.

As for the Mozart, it is deliciously played, but after the glorious Bach suites just heard I found it difficult to shift gears into this work. That being said, the fourth movement was particularly satisfying, providing just the right tonal balance as well as the emotional texture of the piece in a way that just felt right. Anything following the Bach suites previously heard (they are just so perfect) would have been difficult to switch gears into, but listened to after a break, this Mozart work is most certainly satisfying.

The liner notes are very well written and informative, providing both excellent musical information as well as technical detail and background. This is a wonderful recording, and the music is incredible – Mr. Hill does an incredible job performing the pieces contained herein both sensitively and technically correct. I highly recommend this recording!
