Personnel: Howard McGhee (trumpet); Teddy Edwards (tenor saxophone); Art Hillery (piano); Billy Higgins (drums).
Recording information: 04/1988-05/1988.
Tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards was in trumpeter Howard McGhee's group during 1945-47. Over 30 years later they reunited for what would be McGhee's final recording sessions (although the trumpeter lived until 1987). With pianist Art Hillery, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Billy Higgins completing the group, McGhee and Edwards are in excellent form on a set filled with bop standards composed by Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Pettiford and Tadd Dameron. Highlights include "Relaxin' at Camarillo," "Blues in the Closet" and "In Walked Bud." A second and less interesting set (Wise in Time) came from these same dates. ~ Scott Yanow
