Notes & Reviews:

John Wilson, a BBC Proms favorite, joins for the first time with the BBC Philharmonic on Chandos to bring us this new series of works by American composer Aaron Copland. This first volume of the series includes the composer's most famous ballets, including suites from 'Billy the Kid' and 'Appalachian Spring', Four Dance Episodes from 'Rodeo', Fanfare for the Common Man, and El Salon Mexico.

Sunday Times, 17th January 2016
Wilson is in his element here, coaxing razzmatazzy playing from the BBC Philharmonic in the rhythmically charged Mexican Dance and battle scene from Billy the Kid, and the Buckaroo Holiday and Hoe-Down from Rodeo. There is tenderness, too, even a touch of Leonard Bernsteinesque wallowing in the unforgettable folksy melodies of Appalachian Spring.

Gramophone Magazine, March 2016
Wilson's performances are... impressive, and he secures superb playing from the BBC Philharmonic... the three ballets receive strongly characterised interpretations, as piquant and affecting in the slower passages as they are punchy and ebullient in the faster ones... I enjoyed listening to this disc enormously.

BBC Music Magazine, March 2016
John Wilson shows an instinctive flair for Copland's syncopated and changing rhythms, and brings out all the music's broad humour and intimate poetry.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
In Volume 1 of what appears to be a Copland cycle, John Wilson and the BBC Symphony perform the Billy and Rodeo suites and Appalachian Spring. They have plenty of energy and power. Wilson's Billy is more romantic in the big opening and closing movements, and his wind solos are more blended. The fast dances are light and sprightly. The lyrical episodes are evocative, and 'Gun Battle' is similar. In Rodeo, 'Hoe Down' has plenty of rip, and the middle episodes are lovely thanks to the BBC strings.

Appalachian Spring displays excellent detail, solid rhythm, and good energy, with the BBC strings at their warmest. Most performances treat that fortissimo judiciously.
