American Record Guide, May/June 2016
The flute is a modern wooden instrument accompanied by a Brachoss-Liszt piano made in Geneva in 1835. There is a lovely picture of them both on the cover. They sound marvelous. This is two-thirds familiar repertory, and taken more slowly than usual. This approach has gravity and meaning.

The Schubert sounds positively epic in places like Variation 2. Variation 3 - really the only slow one - begins quite fast but settles into real loveliness. There is excellent voicing and balance in the piano part. The Reinecke is superb. Here and elsewhere Guy Raffalli tapers notes down to nothing, which demonstrates the intonation and control of a master. The Weber is heavenly. The flute is nested in the sound of the piano, and the result is just right. From a quiet beginning, the slow movement works up to a furious storm. The whole is shaped and paced well. This was originally a piano sonata, and we hear Weber's own transcription. It is one of the best flute works from the first half of the 19th Century.
