Notes & Reviews:

Handel's Water Music is a collection of orchestral movements, often published as three suites. It was premiered on July 17, 1717 after King George I requested a concert on the river Thames. This timeless collection is brought to life by Baroque specialists the Akademie fr Alte Musik Berlin, whose critical achievements include a GRAMMY Award, a Diapason d'Or, the Cannes Classical Award, a Gramophone Award, an Edison Award and a German Record Critics' Award.

CD Review, 20th February 2016
Playing that doesn't just celebrate the outdoorsy elements - the winds and the horns for George I's trip down the Thames, but the beauty and delicacy of the writing as well ... Tremendous fun, such light playing; brilliant ... it takes real thought and preparation to make these famous pieces come up as fresh as they do here ... properly invigorating, it's a Thames boat trip I think I'd pay to embark on.

Gramophone Magazine, March 2016
From the delightfully sprightly Allegro of the Overture, the Berlin period band give a predictably enjoyable, accomplished performance: polished, rhythmically spirited and supple.

BBC Music Magazine, April 2016
The piece's vitality and brilliance of invention shine forth in the strongest and most appealing orchestral colours... the quality of playing is extraordinary... the period instruments register superbly in a rich and full sonic picture that achieves something close to an ideal textural balance.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
This is for Water Music lovers who enjoy very emphatically period-style performance. The Berlin ensemble consists of 26 players here. Playing is certainly bracing, and the interplay of colors in quieter movements is quite charming. Tempos can sometimes be very brisk. Still, the less pretentious movements are given a very fresh quality. (The now-conventional division into three suites by key is followed here.) The instrumental vitality is enhanced with close miking and full-blooded sonority. With so many recordings, of so many times and values, of this popular work, I would recommend this new one as a leader in period instrument style. My strongest preference would be for Robert King's recording, which manages to include also the complete Royal Fireworks Music in its original wind version (Helios 55375).
