Notes & Reviews:

Brahms's Violin Sonatas have become a reference for the "romantic sonata form." Each of the three works has its own sentimental mood. The first uses the theme from Brahms's "Regenlied" and is obviously modeled on Beethoven's last Violin Sonata. The second is warmer and more intimate, drawing inspiration from his affection for young German soprano Hermine Spies. The third has a vehemence and greatness which, this time, exceeds the Beethovenian model of the Kreutzer-Sonata. Iconic violinist David Oistrakh is accompanied by Frida Bauer on Sonata No.1 and No.3 and Sviatoslav Richter on No.2.
