Octobre (Quebec): 1972-1989

Album Notes

For many, many years Octobre's LPs had been unavailable. Only the 1977 L'Autoroute des Rêves, recorded for CBS (now Sony), was reissued on CD in the early '90s. But in 1995, Quebec's leading Francophone label, Audiogram, released 1972-1989, a mammoth two-CD set comprising most of the group's output, from the 1973 eponymous LP to excerpts from the group's July 8, 1989, reunion concert, the first time Pierre Flynn, Jean Dorais, Mario Légaré, and Pierre Hébert played together as Octobre in seven years. Songs from Octobre (1973), Les Nouvelles Terres (1974), Survivance (1975), and Clandestins (1980) are all included except one to two tracks per album. L'Autoroute des Rêves was ignored altogether in order to leave room for the material otherwise no longer available, but two of its strongest pieces, "Le Vent Se Lève" and "Insurrection," are represented in the form of live recordings from the 1978 two-LP set Chants dans la Nuit. Disc two ends with convincing 1989 performances of "Le Chant du Souterrain," a song only found on the live album, and classics "Violence," "Dans Ma Ville," and "La Maudite Machine." Flynn oversaw the song selection and sacrificed the group's weakest tracks. A generous booklet with notes by group members, archive photos, and lyrics to all songs make this the definitive Octobre collection and one of the best reissue jobs on a Quebec artist's catalog. Essential for anyone interested in Quebec '70s rock. ~ François Couture
