Notes & Reviews:
Pianist Wilhelm Kempff enjoyed a long career, and boasted an impressive catalog of LP recordings. Oftentimes, it is forgotten that he actually began his recording career during the 1920s in the acoustic period. This set of Beethoven recordings from the legendary musician includes the first ever recording of Beethoven's First Piano Concerto. The late acoustic recording is from 1925, and shows a more adventurous and sprightly Kempff than the later works for which he is better known. The Third and Fifth Concertos included in this set feature the best German orchestras of the time, and offer a worthy alternative to the Schnabel cycle.
