Notes & Reviews:
L'Allegro, il Penserosos ed il Moderato, described as a pastoral ode, is based on allegorical poems by John Milton that describe contrasting aspects of the human spirit: mirth and gaiety (L'Allegro) and reflection and melancholy (il Penseroso). Il Moderato, added by Handel's librettist Charles Jennens, advocates rational moderation.
