Notes & Reviews:

The madrigal "Vestiva i colli" is probably one of the greatest examples of the endurance that some music held in the repertoire of the time, crossing centuries. It originated as a five-voice setting by Palestrina in the 16th century, but it gained so much popularity that many other authors made parodies and variations on it. The art of improvising variations and embellishments is thoroughly intertwined with the performance practice between the 16th and 17th centuries, and it was expected that performers were able to provide their own. "Vestiva i colli" is a paramount example of a common melody to which embellishments are applied. Many composers such as Bassano, Della Casa, De Selma, and Rognoni provide their own, sometimes in multiple versions. These are all showcase pieces, for display of instrumental technique and improvisatory imagination. This embellishment tradition is also extended to the new modern style, the seconda pratica, and it is an important link between it and the older prima pratica. In the new style composers such as Grancini, Cima, and Donati set to write out extensive diminished passages as rhetoric devices functional to the contents of the text. The art of embellishment becomes an integral means, used explicitly, of the new style of the new century. Besides the aforesaid composers the recording focusses on the premiere recording of a Mass by Baldassare Vialardo (d. after 1620), Maestro di Cappella active in Milan. It is a late example of a parody on "Vestiva i colli", thoroughly written in prima pratica style. An ideal recapitulation of the different genres and styles on the CD, it shows how the old and new pratiche were not mutually exclusive but fueled one each other in an intense musical experimentation.
