The Beach Boys: Holland

Album Reviews:

The Wire (12/00, p.56) - "...A mature powerful set of originals..."

Album Notes

Available on the 2-fer CARL AND THE PASSIONS: SO TOUGH/HOLLAND.

This CD contains a bonus track that was originally issued as a 45 that came with the original LP.

Having finally rid themselves of a dated stripe-shirt image with the masterful Surf's Up, the Beach Boys continued the process with this ambitious album. The entire group had decamped to the Netherlands to record much of its content, a decision adding an emotional fission to its 'California Saga' trilogy. Although Brian Wilson's contribution was limited to two excellent songs, siblings Dennis and Carl rose to the occasion, with the latter's particularly impressive 'Trader'. The group's harmonies remain as distinctive as ever, while two recent additions to the line-up, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar, increased the vocal range and added new instrumental muscle. This became their best-selling album for six years, and Holland prepared the way for the Beach Boys' 70s comeback.
