A success both at home and abroad since the 1970s, Brazilian singer/songwriter Milton Nascimento turns on the juice in this recording of his extravagant live show. Richly arranged and full of swelling emotion, TAMBORES DE MINAS finds Nascimento leading his nine-piece band through tender ballads, calypso-flavored dance rave-ups and even a Portuguese version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky." The ballads, like "Cacador de Mim" and "Guardanapos de Papel," powered by Nascimento's emotive, lilting voice, seem to be the crowd's favorites.
The drumming and auxiliary percussion are strong throughout (the driving "Janela Para O Mundo" and "Os Tambores de Minas" are particularly enjoyable). Informed heavily by Brazil's distinctive musical heritage, Nascimento keeps his concertgoers singing, dancing and clapping along. While the flavor of some tracks may err a little on the Vegas-y side for some tastes, the album is still supported by poppy, infectious melodies and makes for an enjoyable, hip-shaking listen.
