The physical release of the digital-only 2014 collection The Essential Edgar Winter, The Definitive Collection surpasses any previous Edgar Winter collection by providing 30 tracks recorded between 1972 and 1981. Prior to this, the best Winter compilation was Legacy's 2002 set The Best of Edgar Winter, a single-disc set that's half the size of The Definitive Collection and also sequenced out of chronological order. The Definitive Collection opens with "Tobacco Road" and marches forth, piling up the hits -- not all of them here, with the minor 1972 single "I Can't Turn You Loose" and 1973's "Hangin' Around" being the notable absences -- along with album tracks that showcase Winter's breadth as a bandleader and guitarist. Sometimes things get a bit sludgy but the compilation illustrates how Winter could be a monster on his six-string and often lead a band that helped him showcase his strengths. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
