Album Remarks & Appraisals:
Norwegian pianist and composer Eyolf Dale burst onto the jazz scene in 2008. Wolf Valley is his fifth album as a leader. Dale's previous solo albums demonstrated a steep progression in skill and ambition that has reached a pinnacle on Wolf Valley. He has a strong classical technique allied to a large sonic soundscape, and he's equally at home with sweeping runs utilizing the whole dynamic range of the piano as with introspective, spacious chords. Dale's music is bold, inventive and always seems to take the listener just where they want to go. Despite having an octet at his disposal, his compositions extend beyond the limitations of eight players, using the palette of vibraphone, violin, saxophones and trumpet to create a vibrant and fresh perspective and demonstrate beyond doubt that this exciting pianist is ready to become a significant name in jazz.
