Notes & Reviews:

Marin Marais and the French style. From a strictly historical point of view, by "French style" we mean the musical language of absolutism, from Paris in the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715) and part of that of Louis XV (1715-1774). It developed in a defined period of time between the last thirty years of the seventeenth century and the first thirty years of the following century. Otherwise, one could speak more generally of "French music", with the risk of indicating a particular idiomatic language, the expression of a musical sensitivity born in France in the middle of the seventeenth centuryand remaining intact until the twentieth century. One of the most famous exponents of the instrumental-chamber "French style" was Marin Marais, a composer and virtuoso on the viola da gamba who belonged to that group of musicians (Hotteterre, Rebel, Couperin, Clerambault, to mention only a few) who lived in Paris a generation after Jean Baptiste Lully (born Giovanni Battista Lulli), the Florentine from Santa Lucia del Prato who invented French musical culture: a completely artificial language which, at a certain moment in history,is counterpoised to the Italian taste which had been dominant also in France until shortly before.
