Notes & Reviews:

In 1941, the Nazis began deporting Jews to the concentration camp in Theresienstadt. An unusually high number of musicians were deported there, to be used for propaganda purposes. The musicians living in Terezín composed hundreds of vocal and instrumental works. Music was a means of coping with the uncertainty and constant fear that marked these people's lives. This recording offers songs written by inmates of this concentration camp: Adolf Strauss, Viktor Ullman, Carlo Taube, Ilse Weber, Gideon Klein, and James Simon. The composer Norbert Glanzbert survived World War II by hiding in unoccupied France until 1944 and went on to compose music in memory of those who had perished. Soprano Rachel Joselson pursued an active opera career in Germany before returning to the U.S. in the late 1990s, where she performed at the Metropolitan Opera. On the faculty at the University of Iowa, she is joined on this program by pianist Réne Lecuona, who is also on the faculty.
