Dave Grusin: One of a Kind

Album Notes

Personnel includes: Dave Grusin (conductor, acoustic & Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer, percussion); Grover Washington Jr. (soprano saxophone); Don Elliot (mellophone, background vocals); Dave Valentin (flute); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Francisco Centeno, Anthony Jackson (electric bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Larry Rosen (triangle); Ralph McDonald (percussion); Ed Walsh (programming).

Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Larry Rosen.

A fairly typical Dave Grusin date from the early days of GRP, this set features five of the keyboardist/producer's originals. The music is often atmospheric and a bit cinematic, with Grusin assisted by the soprano of Grover Washington and flutist Dave Valentin (along with top rhythm section players) on two songs apiece; "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" has Grusin's keyboards joined just by Ron Carter's bass. The music is pleasing, but not too substantial. ~ Scott Yanow
