Album Summary

>Tabakov, Emil : Bulgarian Dances (5), for orchestra
>Tabakov, Emil : Symphony no 8
Conductor Ensembles Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Emil Tabakov is following after many great musicians. Like Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, he is an active composer and conductor, following Mahler even more closely, he now has nine symphonies to his name. Tabakov's symphonies explore the darker side of humanity, often referred to as atmospheric and expansive. Both works, Symphony No. 8 and Five Bulgarian Dances are first recorded on this new release.

Reviews

"Expansive and Atmospheric"
Scored for large orchestra, the Symphony No.8 (2007-09) of Bulgarian composer/conductor Emil Tabakov (Born 1947), opens with a dark, foreboding Largo (18:45) followed by a second Largo (11:03) which expands upon this oppressive sense of angst. The work concludes with a fierce Presto (13:36) only partially relieved by a suggestion of quiet resignation in the final measures. The style is complex, dense and severe. There is barely a trace of traditional tonality or harmony. The composerís unique sound world is the end product of subjecting several motivic cells to constantly morphing layers of color and texture. The Five Bulgarian Dances (2011) occupy an entirely different universe. They are melodic, rhythmically forthright, brilliantly orchestrated, comfortably accessible. The committed playing of the Bulgarian NRSO is somewhat rough-hewn, an asset apropos these 2 compositions. The sound image fashioned by the production team is three dimensional and dynamic. Toccata Classics, an enterprising label out of London, should be commended for championing unusual material like this. The remaining 8 symphonies could be very interesting.
