Notes & Reviews:
Alternating the roles of soloist and accompanist, Alexander Melnikov performs a selection of works that are emblematic of Sergei Rachmaninov at his creative peak - before it was brutally disrupted by the upheavals of the 1917 Russian Revolution. His famous Études-Tableaux and Six Poems were followed by a very long silence. In 1931, it was a man broken by destiny who produced the Variations on a Theme by Corelli, an acerbic work that yearns for a past gone forever. Originally released in 2008, this mid-priced reissue also features soprano Elena Brilova.
