Mojo (Publisher) (5/01, p.46) - "Some touching ballads...plus a fine cover of Tim Rose's 'Long Time Man' and the story song, 'The Carny'..."
Pitchfork (Website) - "YOUR FUNERAL...MY TRIAL showcases Cave and the Bad Seeds' various modes and models with peak-form precision, building up from the elegantly wasted reveries, creepy cabaret set pieces and exquisite murder balladry of the album's first act before erupting into the show-stopping, whip-cracking surges of the second."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.79) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The Bad Seeds play a more collaborative role, Mick Harvey especially, with their psychotic aggression driving another great fable, `The Carny,' and the hypnotically otherworldly `Stranger Than Kindness.'"
Uncut (magazine) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The climactic 'Long Time Man' is surely the howl of a cornered animal, in both art and life."
Cave digs even deeper into his personal obsessions here than on the previous THE FIRSTBORN IS DEAD. While FIRSTBORN's ominous bluesiness is still represented on the title track and "Long Time Man," the balance of this album sounds decidedly more European. It was here that Cave's Gothic troubadour persona really began to take shape. He takes the role of the grim storyteller on the album's strongest track "The Carny" (featured to fine effect in Wim Wenders' film WINGS OF DESIRE, in which Cave also appears as himself) and "Stranger Than Kindness." There's a gauzy, almost supernatural feel to YOUR FUNERAL, evocative of the classic Hammer horror films--classy and expertly constructed, but undeniably disturbing.
