Pitchfork (Website) - "With a running time of just over 15 minutes, it's a sweet little gem of an EP....Smith's voice returns to the hushed intimacy of her earliest recordings."
Lo-fi songwriter/musician Gabrielle Smith, aka Eskimeaux, solidifies her transition from more experimental indie folk to catchy, introspective indie pop with Year of the Rabbit, her second label release with Double Double Whammy. Recorded mostly live, the six-track mini-album's scenes are a touch more immediate than 2015's O.K., though both are warm, lo-fi, contemplative outings that evade robotization. The wistful yet summery "Power" offers catchy jangle fare with some refreshingly unexpected phrasing, and Smith's wispy vocal delivery sits nicely in the melody of the light-handed title track, an uptempo ditty that features frequent collaborator Greta Kline, aka Frankie Cosmos. ~ Marcy Donelson
