R&B star Faith Evans turns on the seasonal charm for this eclectic holiday offering. Between traditional material ("O Come All Ye Faithful") and the odd original (the opener, "Happy Holiday"), there are versions of classic tunes like "White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song." Evans's version of "The Day That Love Began," one of the album's highlights, joins a proud R&B lineage that includes past recordings by both Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder.
Hard-line traditionalists may take issue with some of the reworkings here ("O Come All Ye Faithful," for example, comes replete with finger-snaps and sultry, dreamy chimes), but Evans's voice--which is as flexible and acrobatic as ever--makes them work. A FAITHFUL CHRISTMAS is sure to please Evans fans, and can be recommended for R&B enthusiasts seeking a little holiday cheer.
