Option (Nov.-Dec./92, p.142) - "...it's Saldivar's accordion playing that is the drawing card..."
San Antonio squeezebox-man Mingo Saldivar started playing professionally at age 23 in 1959 and has endured as a distinctive conjunto musician, blending the South Texas sounds with country. This 13-song release, produced by Brave Combo's polkaholic, Carl Finch, features all-new recordings, drawing material from Saldivar's five-decade repertoire. Lively cumbias, rancheras, polkas, a bolero and a ranchera waltz keep dancers busy (if they're so inclined), and lyrics are given in both Spanish and English (a few songs are sung in both languages). Standouts include "Andan Diciendo" (the title track), and "Rueda de Fuego" (a cover of "Ring of Fire" done as a ranchera). ~ Dennis MacDonald, Roundup Newsletter
