Notes & Reviews:

This album is titled after the first piece for which composer Emily Howard gained critical acclaim. The work was commissioned in 2008 by the Liverpool European Capital of Culture for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko. Later that year, she received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award. As an undergraduate at Oxford University, Emily Howard studied mathematics and computer science. She went on to receive a Doctorate in Composition from the University of Manchester. She is a Senior Lecturer in Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music. The title track, Magnetite (2007), was Howard's first orchestral commission. Magnetite is the oldest known magnetic substance, and the piece describes "a journey deep inside one of these crystals."
