Mendelssohn: Octet, Op. 20; Albumblatt, Op. 117; Song without Words, Op. 109; Variations concertantes, Op. 17 / Roel Dieltiens, cello; Frank Braley, piano

Notes & Reviews:

A year before writing his unforgettable Midsummer Night's Dream overture, Mendelssohn had already taught elves and fairies to fly in the Scherzo of his Octet Op.20. Composed at the age of sixteen, with just four violins, two violas and two cellos, the Octet is already innovative in its basic creative concept. Originally released in 2005, this recording featuring Roel Dieltiens, Frank Braley and Ensemble Explorations aptly displays just how far Mendelssohn expanded the expressive range of chamber music.
