Album Notes

The first soundtrack to the critically acclaimed Comedy Central sitcom, Broad City [Original Series Soundtrack] arrives after the third season of the series and after the network renewed the show for a fourth and fifth season. The music sets the scene for the two young adult women in New York City with electronic, hip-hop, and alternative rap artists such as RJD2, Lizzo, and Jarina De Marco. The program's intro music, "Latino & Proud" by Chilean producer DJ Raff, is also included, and though fans only hear a few seconds of it on the show (it also opens the soundtrack), the full version closes the uptempo 12-track collection. A few more atmospheric club tracks, like "Marijuana" by Zebra Katz and Kashaka and Cubby's "Steady Now [Karman Remix]," are outnumbered by empowering entries such as "#NOTYOURS" by Scooter Island featuring Junglepussy, and the dance-pop tune "Let 'Em Say" by Lizzo and Caroline Smith ("Don't wanna think like a man/Or look like a model/I wanna look like my momma"). Well-curated and occasionally explicit, the playlist suits the show's cheeky tone and may well appeal to fans of stylized electro-hop beyond the show's audience. Tony Quattro provided the original song "Dat Gyal" for the series, which makes its recording debut here. ~ Marcy Donelson
