Raul Seixas: Ao Vivo: Unico E Exclusivo

Album Notes

This is a 18-track live recording from the '80s, where an inspired Raul Seixas performs nine of his own most well-known songs together with nine American rock classics. Seixas was always very fond the first generation of American rock singers and composers, such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Bill Haley. They were a constant source of inspiration throughout Seixas' career, and it is therefore natural that the first half of this album is a tribute to these artists. Musically, Seixas doesn't drift very far away from the original '50s recordings, but his very personal charisma and artistic style make these covers surprisingly interesting. The passion and sheer energy in Seixas' performance, together with the powerful electric guitar, also lend these old rock classics a refreshing boost of vitality. A fun detail is how Seixas mixes "Blue Moon" with Luiz Gonzaga's "Asa Branca." Gonzaga, one of the most legendary artists of the Brazilian Northeast, was of course another ever-present source of inspiration for Seixas. The second half of the album consists of famous compositions by Seixas himself, such as the exquisite "Trem das Sete," "Perlúdio," and "Metamorfose Ambulante." The gushing enthusiasm evident in Seixas' voice on "Sociedade Alternativa" is particularly contagious. All in all, Raul Vivo is a very good live album. ~ Philip Jandovsky
