Notes & Reviews:

The most famous composer of operas in the early 18th century, Gluck was to enjoy phenomenal success, wirh Orfeo ed Euridice still the most frequently performed stage work from that era. Alceste, composed in 1767 and five years after Orfeo, continues in the same mood of tragedy, Gluck's strong melodic content providing arias of great beauty. It is here performed in the original version, first produced in Vienna in the year of composition.
