Notes & Reviews:

Born to a peasant family in Bohemia in 1739, Johann Baptist Vanhal became one of the most important composers working in Vienna in the 18th century: considered by many to be the equal of Haydn. Vanhal wrote at least 100 symphonies, their genial and attractive melodies giving them immediate allure. The works are beautifully performed here, and the sound on this CD is the cream of Naxos' considerable achievements.
