The choruses and orchestra, though unknown, are polished and very fine. The recording is superb. The notes, too, are very good. A master finally revealed
From the opening bars, the unique sound and depth to this work has a strangely familiar ring to the ear, as does his Requiem. Compelling similarities with Haydn's Creation immediately come to mind, but then there is the realisation that Eybler's work preceded Joseph Haydn's masterpiece by several years. So why has this composer remained uncelebrated and forgotten for so long? Putting aside speculation of injustices in this world, the paramount point is that we can now enjoy these gems through the conviction and efforts of Helbich, and the superlative voices of his soloists.
