Notes & Reviews:

"American composer Irwin Bazelon (1922-95) confronted the same conundrum facing all composers from Haydn onward: How does one deal with the commercial demands of music and still maintain one's integrity? Bazelon's answer, as implicit in the music presented here, most likely would have been: "Write the best music you know how, no matter what the circumstance...and then let everything else sort itself out. The sorting-out should follow the music, not be a way of determining its viability - market or otherwise"...Suffice it to say that these are pieces are essential, and are here given inspired and ultravervy performances by the Rousse Philharmonic (a Bulgarian ensemble!) conducted by Harold Farberman. In a world wherein one must often settle for so-so readings of 20th-century American repertoire by worthy but underrehearsed orchestras, these performances go right to the top of my short desert-island list." - William Zagorski, Fanfare
