Notes & Reviews:

Carlo Maria Giulini remains the leading living Italian conductor, even counting Abbado and Muti, following in the wake of Toscanini and de Sabata. Giulini's elegance and gentleness differed markedly from the latter two, but his refusal to compromise on quality and less than the highest standards was straight from the Toscanini mold. Giulini was never comfortable in the studio, so this live performance of these two works is a significant addition to the catalog.
