Notes & Reviews:

Louis Moreau Gottschalk, born on May 8th 1829, was a musical boulevardier of the Deep South. He seems to have been the first, and for a long time the only composer to have taken notice of the slave culture thriving in his birthplace, New Orleans. The tunes and rhythms of the slaves worked their way into Gottschalk's music, and he was the first to present them to an astonished Europe.
