Notes & Reviews:

" The program is richly varied, from spirituals and ballads of love to cowboy songs and amusing lyrics. They have in common a wealth of pleasing melody that makes for easy listening. Equally, one would have to acknowledge that the memorabilty factor is variable. Maggie and Millie and Molly and May will swim around your head for days; the setting of the spiritual Ride Up in the Chariot is a beautiful work, and Lift me into Heaven Slowly is calculated to bring a lump to the throat. The performances are deeply committed, with John O'Brien's accompaniment moving sympathetically and perfectly in scale with the singers. They all obviously enjoyed making the disc, and convey this pleasure to the listener. The music does not always lie comfortably for the two voices chosen, and I am not too convinced with Toppin's use of "different" voices to point out the style of the music. But the most important element of the issue is the satisfaction of having these songs made available to us. The sound quality is excellent." - David Denton, Fanfare
