Personnel: Dhruba Ghosh (sarangi); Jyoti Ghosh, Bhairavi Kumar (tanpura); Nayan Ghosh (tabla).
Recorded at Western Outdoor Studios, Bombay, India on February 23, 1991. Includes liner notes by Nicolas Magriel.
Accompanied by Nayan Ghosh (tabla), Jyoti Ghosh (tanpura), and Bhairavi Kumar (tanpura), accomplished sarangi musician Dhruba Ghosh performs one raga and one kajri for this 1991 recording released as simply Sarangi (India Archive Music, 2000). Before the fun folk song from eastern Uttar Pradesh, "Kajri in Dadra Tal," comes the main piece of the album, the "Raga Kaushi Kanada," a raga for late night that combines the raags "Malkauns" and "Darbari Kanada." Dhruba Ghosh's performance of this raga has an opening, slow section of almost 40 minutes followed by a fast section of nearly 20 minutes in length. In addition to the excellent music heard on Sarangi is the added bonus of its detailed and informative English liner notes. ~ Joslyn Layne
