Notes & Reviews:

"...In general, Hasse's music has a lyrical elegance and flow that helps to account for the popularity he enjoyed in his lifetime. The well of melodic invention never goes dry, and his delicate evocation of the sentiment of each text is quite delicious...Kai Wessel is one of the oustanding countertenor soloists of our day. His pure tone and exquisite control are perfectly suited to this repertory...I have never heard him in better form..." -Gatens, ARG

The virtuosity of early classical music seems to have become second nature to the Musica Alta Ripa. On this CD the members of this prizewinning ensemble, together with Kai Wessel, one of the top countertenors of our time, pay homage to Johann Adolf Hasse, one of the most inventive and successful contemporaries of Johann Sebastian Bach, with first recordings representing a selection from his finest cantatas and sonatas.

Kai Wessel, born in Hamburg in 1964, studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. René‚ Jacobs and Peter Kooy were among his teachers. His extraordinary career as a specialist in the field of early music has been accompanied by prizes and awards and has taken him to the world's leading opera houses.

The outstanding artistic achievements of the Musica Alta Ripa have earned this ensemble many international awards, among them the German Recording Prize, Echo Classical Prize, and Cannes Classical Award.
