Notes & Reviews:

This beautiful program is unique on several accounts; to begin, the repertoire. Antonio Bertali and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer both lived in the generation before J.S. Bach and Biber, and these elegiac, meditative, serene, and highly improvisatory pieces are little known. Secondly, the instrumentation: solo violin over a basso continuo of harpsichord and organ, both playing out the full harmonic and contrapuntal potential of their instruments simultaneously. The effect is mesmerizing.
